California Rain Beetle

Pleocoma sp.

Graphite, 2025, NFS, 11” x 14”

Rain Beetles are only found at the western edge of North America. They spend 7 to 14 years as larvae feeding underground. The emergence of adults is triggered by the first heavy rains of the season. They do not feed and only live long enough for the male to locate a female at the edge of her borrow and then reproduce.
